German automaker Audi and China-owned SAIC have finally reached an agreement on electric vehicle development as they aim to solidify their presence in the world’s largest auto market, China.
SAIC Motor confirmed the previous speculations about a potential partnership with Audi to Chinese media platform Jiemian earlier today. With this, Audi will most likely source its EV platform from SAIC’s subsidiary IM Motors.
As EV-a2z previously reported, Audi had no choice but to look for an alternative because of the major delay of its expected Scalable Systems Platform (SSP) architecture from parent Volkswagen Group.
“All stakeholders agree that the Chinese auto market is in the midst of the biggest transformation in its history. Therefore we will jointly work on a strategic approach that guarantees our future success.”

However, the scope of the partnership remains a little bit vague.
What is currently known about the agreement?
SAIC announced that it had reached a consensus with the Volkswagen-owned brand, aiming to collaborate in accelerating electric vehicle development. Specifically, SAIC’s IM Motor will most likely provide its next platform for Audi’s EV models in China.
Previous reports suggest that Audi is looking to utilize the platform of the IM L7 saloon and IM LS7 SUV. It apparently supports an 800V electric architecture for models with 2800mm to 3200mm wheelbases.
However, the partnership may also pursue a co-development of an entirely bespoke platform for the German brand.
The Chinese automaker also stated that the partnership will attempt to expand its “strategic cooperation” from this as the Chinese automotive market continues to shift.
Unfortunately, no additional information from the automakers is disclosed at the moment.

SAIC is undoubtedly an experienced automaker with considerable EV technology and production expertise. With this partnership, Audi will be able to accelerate its EV development and address the Chinese market demand more effectively.
The Chinese auto market is rapidly expanding with more startups and legacy automakers joining the EV shift. That said, Audi really has no time to wait for VW’s SSP architecture, which is slated to undergo development by 2029.
