Lucid’s advancement to the top spot aligns with the US Department of Energy’s recent report, indicating that the 516-mile Lucid Air Grand Touring was the longest-range EV model in 2023. However, it is more expensive, with a $80,000 base price, than most electric vehicles in the market today.
Nonetheless, there are also more affordable options on the list. For instance, the Hyundai Ioniq 6 enables a driving range of up to 361 miles for $38,615 MSRP. Customers can also benefit from the $7,500 Retail Bonus Cash program on all 2024 IONIQ 6 trims, lowering the final price to just more than $30,000.
Electric vehicle industry expansion
Electric vehicles remain the fastest-growing market in the automotive industry. Industry experts even expect them to surpass the 10% threshold this year.
In addition, Tesla is still the market leader, with a 55% share in electric vehicle sales in the US in 2023.
As other players sought to challenge Tesla’s dominance, some brands started to catch up by launching longer-range EVs. For instance, German automakers BMW, Mercedes, and Audi enjoyed strong sales in the US last year.
Moreover, Ford, Hyundai, Volkswagen, and Volvo, among others, reached new highs in EV sales in the same period.
EV sales growth
The US reported record-breaking electric vehicle sales of almost 1.2 million units in 2023, accounting for 7.6% of the entire auto market. According to Kelley Blue Book’s recent data, this figure represents a notable increase from just 5.9% in the prior year.
In the fourth quarter alone, battery-electric vehicles accounted for 317,168 units of the total 3.8 million light-duty vehicle sales in the US. The report further noted that EV sales surged 40% yearly in the last quarter of 2023.
The continuous advancement of electric vehicle technology, particularly in terms of range, significantly boosts the shift to e-mobility in the US. It is only natural for customers to seek long-range models to avoid the hassle of stopping at charging stations during the trip. More than 300-mile range models can sufficiently support drivers with enough charge for their weekly commute.
