The lack of emissions may convince you to convert from gas-powered vehicles to electric vehicles. Though concerns about EV’s availability for charging infrastructure, its capability to run between chargings (range), and foremost, electric vehicle safety may stop you from reconsidering.
Several people ask whether electric vehicles are as safe as their internal combustion engine alternatives. A record of 6.5% of respondents on a survey by Leasing Options has stated concerns about whether EVs would explode in car accidents, according to Ev-a2z.
Reasons why EVs are safer than ICE vehicles
A new Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) report says that EVs are at least as safe as conventional vehicles. Insurance data shows EV injury claims are substantially less frequent than for gas vehicles. The new 2021 Volvo XC40 Recharge (small SUV) attained a Top Safety Pick+ designation, the highest IIHS award, according to Neale & Fhima.
Neale & Fhima further reiterated that increasing data shows electric vehicles are safer than gasoline-powered ones. And to top it off, there are various reasons why EVs are considered safer than internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles.
1. The injury rate claimed by EV drivers is 40% less than the claims made by ICE vehicle drivers. According to David Harkey, IIHS president, it may be because EVs weigh a lot more.
2. The EV batteries are found low in the vehicle, falling the center of gravity and reducing the likelihood of a rollover, according to DesignNews.
3. Due to the absence of fuel, EVs are less likely to ignite upon collisions.
“If two vehicles of different mass collide, the heavier one will get less deceleration than the lighter vehicle. Otherwise, occupants in the heavier vehicle are at lower risk in a collision than that of lighter vehicles.”

While electric vehicles may have some unique safety considerations, they are generally considered as safe as other vehicles on the road. In some cases, they may even be safer due to their advanced safety features and structural design.
