The Volkswagen Group has adjusted its electric vehicle sales target in Europe under the VW passenger car brand.
According to Thomas Ulbrich, VW brand’s New Mobility business head, the company aims for at least 80% of the brand’s sales in Europe to be all-electric models in 2030.
Volkswagen’s ambitious electrification goal
Under Volkswagen’s Accelerate electrification strategy, the last goal for 2030 was set at 70 percent and was announced in 2021. The new target, however, is significantly higher.
Ulbrich stated to Automobilwoche that the VW brand possesses the most ambitious goal of all the brands produced by the Volkswagen Group, including Audi, Skoda, and SEAT/Cupra.
He said the company has “always been at the forefront of these issues in the group, and we feel obliged to set our targets so high.”
However, Ulbrich admitted that the current target is “extremely ambitious.” He said it demonstrates the company’s dedication to the strategic electrification plan.
New and redesigned models
Energyjobline reported that the automaker does not plan to increase its fully electric vehicle sales targets for other major markets, such as China or the United States. The Volkswagen brand has kept its target for the percentage of battery-electric vehicles sold in these countries at 50 percent.
Last year, slightly more than ten percent of the VW brand’s overall passenger car sales comprised fully electric cars.
For Volkswagen to meet the ambitious electrification goal in Europe, the automaker will release several new and redesigned models as part of its ID lineup of fully electric vehicles.
The Volkswagen ID.3 has just received a revamp that draws a more uniform look inside and out, in addition to software updates; the fourth quarter of this year is when deliveries will begin in Europe.
ID.1 and ID.2 models coming this 2025
Following the launch of the updated ID.3, Volkswagen will introduce the ID.7, a Passat-sized electric sedan that is scheduled to be shown for the first time on March 15.
Before 2023 comes to a close, deliveries of the ID.7 will start being made to European customers. A wagon version of the ID.7 Tourer is also something that Volkswagen is rumored to be considering.
At some point in 2025, Volkswagen also intends to release two electric vehicles (EVs) with starting prices of less than €25,000 (approximately $26,500).
These vehicles will likely be referred to as the ID.1 and ID.2, consisting of a hatchback and a crossover. In addition, a plug-in hybrid version of the SUV known as the Tiguan is anticipated to hit the market in 2026.
