Japanese legacy automaker Toyota reported an almost 5% year-on-year growth to 800,863 units in its global sales in April. According to the press release, the company’s noticeable sales improvement is due to the overall market recovery from the semiconductor supply crisis and COVID-19 pandemic effects.

Apart from these, Reuters also pointed out that the increasing demand for hybrids and internal combustion engine cars in Japan and China propelled the sudden sales increase in April.
In addition, Toyota’s global battery electric vehicle sales also improved last month, surpassing its Q1 2022’s record.
Toyota reported that its overall vehicle sales hit 800,863 units, including its luxury brand Lexus. As mentioned, that figure indicates a 4.9% YoY growth from the same period in 2022, when the entire market struggled from the COVID-19-caused component supply crisis.
Meanwhile, Toyota hybrids such as the Prius contributed more than 50% of the 125,326-unit sales in Japan. According to the report, it outperformed a 21.5% increase in Toyota’s overall local car sales.
On the other hand, the legacy automaker reported a remarkable 46.3% YoY sales growth to 162,554 units in China last month. That figure indicated a strong rebound from the same period last year during the COVID-19 pandemic surge.
Globally, Toyota reported sales of 8,584 battery-powered cars, including the luxury brand Lexus. For the first time, it contributed over 1% of the company’s global sales.
Notably, that figure raised Toyota’s BEV sales in January-April to 26,057 units, representing a YoY growth from just 24,466 units in 2022.
