The Government of Texas has just launched a limited-time grant program that offers $2,500 rebate for new electric vehicle buyers for select models.
Tesla enthusiast @anuarbekiman shared the major development in an X post (former Twitter), saying that some Tesla cars got on the list.
Eligible Tesla EVs
Texas Commission on Environmental Quality’s Light-Duty Motor Vehicle Purchase or Lease Incentive Program is currently providing up to $2,500 rebates for EV buyers,
However, the program is limited to only 2,000 applicants.
Upon checking the list, all Tesla Model 3 and Y variants are eligible for the rebate. On the other hand, the Tesla Model S only has one qualified variant.
List and application details
The TCEQ has officially opened the applications for the $2,500 EV rebates under the LDPLIP. Applications for the grant rebates will end on March 22, 2024, as per the website.
As mentioned, Texas will only give out 2,000 rebate grants under the program.
Apart from Tesla models, the list also includes various models from established automakers: Ford, Chevrolet, Polestar, Mercedes-Benz, Hyundai, and Kia, among others.
For those interested in submitting an application, buyers must adhere to the detailed instructions and fill out application forms indicated on TCEQ’s website.
Texas’ EV controversies
Teslarati asserted some of the past “controversies” regarding Texas’ electric vehicle industry.
For instance, Texas is just one of the few US states to restrict direct-to-customer sales. This regulation forbids Tesla and other automakers to sell their offerings without third-party retailers.
Apart from that, Texas also imposed a road user tax for EVs in September. SB 505 mandates EV owners to pay $200 annually alongside their car registration.

Despite these controversies, Texas continues to launch its own EV strategies and programs to promote the wider shift to electric vehicles.
It is also worth noting that Texas houses one of Tesla’s biggest vehicle factories in Austin. The Gigafactory Texas has already produced approximately 15,000 direct and indirect job positions for locals, as per the latest economic impact report.
