After upgrading Giga Shanghai’s production lines, Tesla China is reportedly sending several employees to California to aid the Fremont factory’s increasing output, as per Drive Tesla Canada.
Tesla sends employees to the Fremont factory
Tesla China is sending an estimated 200 engineers and production staff to Fremont. Many of them are automation and control engineers who, throughout their time in the US, will assist counterparts with enhancing the production of the Model S/3/X/Y, according to sources that spoke with Bloomberg.
“The employees are expected to arrive in California as soon as November and will be staying in California for at least three months,” said the sources.
The team at Tesla China has been thriving since upgrading the factory’s production lines in the summer. Those upgrades increased the capacity from about 750,000 cars to over 1 million per year.
That increased capacity reflected immediate results, with the Texas-based company producing a record number of cars in months following the upgrades.
Last August 2022, the factory achieved a new production record with 76,605 cars laid out the factory. Notably, one month later, in September showed an increase to 82,088 new vehicles built at Giga Shanghai.
The increased capacity results in decreased wait times for consumers. Once the upgrades were completed, estimated delivery wait times fell to as little as one week for Model 3/Y variants.
Moreover, Tesla’s Fremont factory has operated above capacity for a while, as the company outgrew the space it took over in 2010.
During a visit to the factory earlier this year, analyst Trip Chowdhry said, “the factory was running at 10% to 20% above capacity.”
Fremont annual capacity
In the most recent quarterly shareholder deck, the automaker said Fremont had a yearly 650,000 vehicle capacity, split between the Model 3/Y (550,000) and the Model S/X (100,000).
It was a visible increase from earlier in the year when the carmaker noted Fremont’s capacity was over 600,000 vehicles, split with the Model 3/Y (500,000) and Model S/X (100,000).
