Recent reports have suggested that the leading American electric automaker will build its next Gigafactory in the state of Mexico. Finally, Tesla confirmed the speculations during the company’s Investor Day on March 1.
“We’re super excited about it. We’ll continue to expand production at all of our existing factories. So this is not moving output to anywhere, from anywhere. This is supplemental production.”
Tesla CEO Elon Musk
Tesla’s planned Mexican production plant
In retrospect, Tesla boss Elon Musk was photographed when he visited Nuevo León in October 2022, which circulated the automotive space. The Mexican governor even stated that CEO Musk’s visit was “not by chance.”
“I’m very optimistic and very happy about what’s coming for our state – that’s why the riches people in the word come here. It’s not by chance. In Nuevo León, as always, we must be an example of how to do things.”
Nuevo León Governor Samuel Garcia
Now, the EV giant confirmed that the company selected Mexico to house its next Gigafactory. CEO Musk announced during the company event on Wednesday that the production plant will be developed in Nuevo León.
It is worth noting that Nuevo León shares a minor border with Texas, which houses Tesla’s Gigafactory in Austin.
Apart from CEO Elon Musk’s announcement, the project was also confirmed by Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador. He disclosed that the EV giant would erect the Gigafactory in Monterrey, the capital of Nuevo León.
Apparently, Tesla will invest more than $5 billion in the major project. As for the estimated production capacity, the new Gigafactory will build about one million electric vehicles annually.
