Tesla is leading in the race for “real-world” artificial intelligence (AI), according to Chief Executive Elon Musk’s remarks during the 2024 Annual Shareholder Meeting in Austin on June 13.
Musk touts Tesla’s AI leadership
Tesla CEO Elon Musk boasted the electric vehicle giant’s significant innovations in AI, particularly in its cutting-edge hardware and chip design.
The American billionaire even asserted that he would choose Tesla’s in-house work over any alternative, downplaying major rivals like Nvidia.
“There’s actually is not a chip from Nvidia—or from any company—that we would prefer to put in our car that is better than what we have in the car. We started from scratch in chip design, just as we started from scratch in AI software, and have the best real-world AI software and the best AI inference chip in the world— from nothing.”

AI software headways
Tesla CEO Elon Musk emphasized the role of the Full Self-Driving (FSD) suite in its long-term AI pursuits during the annual company event.
“If you plot the curve of FSD releases, we’re on the course to unsupervised driving at an exponential pace.”

He further noted that the company is also developing a lot of software internally, which apparently beats any other competitors in the industry today.
“The Tesla operating system internally is head and shoulders above what any other company has, I think probably better than any Fortune 500 company that has internal software—it’s just way better.
Taking a video and making decisions based on the video? No one is close, and it’s getting better with each passing month, if not passing week.”

CEO Musk even mentioned tech giants like Google, Meta, and OpenAI, claiming that these players are behind Tesla “on real-world software.”
Tesla also makes strides on the hardware side
Tesla CEO Elon Musk also boasted the electric automaker’s remarkable progress in hardware development.
“It’s also worth noting that Tesla is pretty good at chip design—the AI inference chip that was designed by Tesla is in cars.
We had our hardware three AI inference [chip]; cars made over the past year had the hardware four, we’ve just completed design on hardware five, which we’re now calling AI five.”

Unlike most electric automakers who depend on off-the-shelf components, Tesla develops its own AI processing chips. This strategy enables the company to have the upper hand in its operations and yield better performance.
All that said, Tesla is indeed remarkable for developing its own self-driving software and the necessary hardware to run it.
Moreover, the Tesla boss is also bullish about the Optimus project’s future, even projecting that it will add tens of trillion of dollars to its current market valuation.
