Tesla Chief Elon Musk recently announced that his plan for the Semi’s volume production would not materialize until late next year, giving the automaker ample time to address any safety issues with the all-electric Class 8 truck.
Tesla Semi recalls
Parking brake module issue
There are clear indications that Tesla is actively addressing the issues or defects surrounding the Semi truck, as evidenced by the recalls initiated by the company.
For instance, Tesla commenced a recall concerning the parking brake module of the Semi in March 2023. As EV-a2z previously reported, this recall is due to the Semi’s defective parking brake valve modules, which are manufactured by one of Tesla’s component suppliers.
Door warning system issue
Moreover, another recall has been recently announced, further emphasizing Tesla’s commitment to resolving any issues associated with the vehicle. The latest recall aims to address and fix the Semi’s issue concerning its door warning system for the rear-hinged side doors.
The Safety Recall Report noted that the safety recall covers 36 Tesla Semi units, estimating that all of them are affected by the issue.
Notably, these defective Tesla Semis are most likely under PepsiCo’s fleet, the automaker’s first customer for the electric truck.
The Safety Recall Report released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) described the issue.
“For side doors like those equipped on Semi, FMVSS 206, S4.1.2.3, requires a door closure warning system that must activate a visual signal when a door latch system is not in its fully latched position and the vehicle ignition is activated.
Because the door closure warning system on affected vehicles activates only when the vehicle’s parking brake is not engaged, regardless of its ‘ignition’ status, and because the operator of certain affected vehicles may dismiss the notification from the door closure warning system, affected vehicles do not comply with FMVSS 206, S4.1.2.3.”

The Tesla Semi vehicles’ reported door-related issue could potentially lead to drivers unintentionally operating the all-electric Class 8 truck with an open side door, posing a safety hazard. Fortunately, the NHTSA noted that Tesla had not received reports of accidents, injuries, or fatalities resulting from this issue.
Following the company’s usual approach, the recent recall of the Semi is being resolved through an over-the-air software update.
