Tesla announced on December 25 that its production of 4680 battery cells has now reached a production rate of more than 1,000 per week, as reported by Electrek.
The American automaker proudly stated that the team generated 868,000 4680 battery cells over the previous week through its official Twitter account:
Remarkably, the reported 4680 battery cell production rate is sufficient to supply 1,000 Tesla Model Y cars.
Tesla’s battery cells production
In retrospect, Tesla introduced the 4680 battery cell in 2020 as its first cell built from scratch. It is part of Tesla’s strategy to produce its battery cells internally with a substantially larger format through a “tableless design,” with the aid of several cell producers.
It is worth noting that Tesla has not been actively sharing relevant data related to its battery cell production. In fact, the first million cells produced at its Fremont pilot facility were the last official data point released in February 2022.
Thereafter, Tesla has only occasionally mentioned percentage improvements in production rate, without sharing the exact digits, not until now.
Nonetheless, Tesla’s milestone of reaching a 1,000 battery cell production rate per week is expected to aid the automaker’s performance in the coming year. It demonstrates that Tesla was able to solve some of the major constraints. Moving forward, we might observe a speedier climb in the automaker’s production capacity.
