Speculations about the Tesla Cybertruck‘s new material have circulated in the automotive space. One of the sources of the said reports was Tesmanian, a news platform focused on Musk‘s ventures, which gained confirmation from the Tesla boss through Twitter.
Patented ultra-hard cold-worked steel alloy
The highly awaited Tesla Cybertruck is renowned for its distinctive stainless steel alloy body design and material, which was recently found to be patented by Tesla. It significantly differs from its rival automakers, which employ aluminum and plastics combinations to develop the vehicle’s body panels.
Tesla keeps the precise proportions of trace materials and chemistry confidential, as is common with material patents. Still, the patent details some of the significant modifications Tesla is making to its material to increase its durability.
Benefits
Some of these modifications are Tesla’s material cost reduction through a cod-rolling method. Interestingly, the steel is bent during the process without being aggressively heated and quenched. Although there are downsides, the alloy prioritizes toughness above everything else to avoid scratches and dents.
Downsides
The electric truck might struggle to pass crash tests with such a stiff material. It prevents the vehicle from crumpling and absorbing energy as readily as other car body panels.
Moreover, the expense of Tesla’s corrosion-resistant and durable material may be reflected in the price of the vehicle.
Notably, the new patent was unveiled through the US Patent Office. It came after the emergence of the Cybertruck’s most in-depth visuals since its debut.
