Tesla’s FSD suite is undoubtedly one of the most innovative driver-assist systems in the market today despite the increasing doubts from critics.
In a significant development, Tesla finally dropped the “Beta” moniker and replaced it with “Supervised.” The company has successfully deployed supervised assisted driving to inner-city streets. In these locations, the FSD (Supervised) only competes with Waymo and Cruise.
Tesla boss expresses willingness to share FSD with other companies
Now, Tesla Chief Musk has once again talked about his plans to offer the FSD tech to other automakers. The American billionaire shared his plans in response to an X post of long-time FSD Beta tester @WholeMarsBlog about self-driving and electric vehicles.
“…we will license the tech to other car companies.”
Tesla CEO Elon Musk
Once Tesla proves that the FSD (Supervised) is actually safer than average human drivers in freeways and inner-city streets, many automakers will undoubtedly adopt the system.
Potential licensing model
Technology content creator @WholeMarsBlog also suggested a smart licensing model for Tesla’s FSD (Supervised):
1. Allow OEM to integrate it into any car for free or at cost. Car owner 2. Active safety & basics comes free 3. Leverage Supercharger deals. Offer same pricing as Tesla cars for EVs that integrate FSD hardware & share data |
Tesla Chief Elon Musk responded again to the X post, saying that the company is open to the raised suggestion.
“Tesla would be happy to do such deals”
Tesla CEO Elon Musk
Even more, the Tesla boss also agreed that future earnings from the planned licensing offers would eventually surpass the company’s business earnings.
“Good chance that turns out to be true.”
Tesla CEO Elon Musk
FSD’s progress
Regarding safety, Tesla’s FSD suite currently does not come in the first spot. According to Car Scoops, the IIHS gave Tesla’s FSD and Autopilot poor rating in a test of 14 ADAS.
Meanwhile, it graded General Motors’ Super Cruise and Nissan’s ProPilot Assist “marginal.” The Lexus Teammate system received an “acceptable” rating. However, none of the 14 tested ADAS got “good” ratings.
Nonetheless, Tesla and Chief Musk are optimistic about the recent FSD update. The CEO even claimed that the latest version is “mind-blowing.” He also offered the FSD for free within 1 month so all Tesla owners can experience the system.
The electric vehicle industry continues to become competitive with new model launches every year. Therefore, innovative technologies like FSD (Supervised) will undoubtedly come as a competitive advantage in the market, potentially encouraging other companies to adopt it.
