American semiconductor supplier onsemi has just secured a major deal with the German legacy automaker Volkswagen Group for the latter’s next-gen electric vehicles.
onsemi and VW Group partner on next-gen EV tech
According to the press release, onsemi and Volkswagen Group formally inked a multi-year agreement on Monday to supply “fully optimized power system solution” for the electric vehicle lineup across several brands.
“We are very pleased to have onsemi as a strategic supplier for the power box of the traction inverter for our first tranche in the SSP platform. onsemi has convinced us with a deeply verticalized supply chain from the growth of the raw material up to the assembly of the power box.”

Agreement details
As part of the agreement, onsemi will serve as the primary provider of a comprehensive power box solution for Volkswagen Group’s upcoming Scalable Systems Platform (SSP) traction inverter.
For context, the system combines silicon carbide-based technologies into a scalable integrated module to support output levels ranging from high to low-power traction inverters. This capability makes the system suitable for all vehicle types.
onsemi’s Chief Executive noted that its technology will aid Volkswagen Group in further boosting the competitiveness of its electric vehicle portfolio while enabling cost reductions.
“By offering a complete power system solution encompassing the entire power sub-assembly, we provide Volkswagen Group with a single, simplified modular and scalable platform that maximizes efficiency and performance for their vehicle lineup.
This new approach allows for the customization of power needs and adding features for different vehicles without compromising on performance, all while reducing cost.”
Hassane El-Khoury, onsemi President and CEO
What’s special about onsemi’s solution?
onsemi’s comprehensive power box solution utilizes the company’s latest-gen EliteSiC M3e platform. It has the capability to accommodate more power in a smaller package, enabling it to substantially minimize energy losses.
It also has three integrated half-bridge modules on top of a cooling channel to guarantee effective heat management from the semiconductor to the coolant encasement, thus enhancing efficiency.
These features enable onsemi’s cutting-edge power box solution to offer stronger performance, better heat control, and higher efficiency, resulting in a more extended driving range for electric vehicles between charges.
With this innovative solution, the German legacy automaker can further accelerate its adoption of future EliteSiC-based platforms and advance as one of the dominant players in the EV landscape.
