Norway‘s passenger car sales saw a sudden growth in October following six months of YoY drops, as per InsideEVs. The country recorded an 8.5% increase to 12,558 new vehicle registrations last month. That considered, the total for the year so far was 115,319, a decrease of 18%.
Plug-in registrations
In October, there were 10,853 new plug-in electric passenger car registrations in Norway, accounting for a 5% increase over a year ago.
However, the market share dropped from 89.3% to 86.4% in 2021.
It is also worth noting that the category has been declining every month in 2022 due to plug-in hybrid vehicles. In October, there was a 49% drop.
Nonetheless, PHEVs have also seen a decline due to decreased tax incentives (CO2 emission component).
On the other hand, BEV sales increased by over 20% from the previous year. Meanwhile, its market share increased from 70.1% to 77.5% over the past year.

Norway’s new passenger plug-in car registrations in October 2022
Over 101,000 new passenger plug-ins have been registered in Norway this year to date. However, it appears now that 2022 will end with a lower level than 2021.
Plug-in car registrations year-to-date:
- BEVs: 89,658 (up 1%, at 77.7% market share)
- PHEVs: 11,450 (down 63%, at 9.9% market share)
- Total: 101,108 (down 15%, at 87.7% market share)
For comparison, there were 151,917 new passenger plug-in electric car registrations in the first 12 months of 2021. It increased by 44% from 2020 at an average market share of 86.2%.
Notably, only 13.6% of the market was made up of gasoline, diesel, and non-rechargeables the previous month. Diesel had a 3.7% market share, gasoline 2.1%, and hybrids 7.8%.
Models
The Volkswagen ID.4 (1,014) and its cousin Skoda Enyaq iV (751) had the most sales in October. Considering 387 Audi Q4 e-tron, there are 2,152 electric crossovers/SUVs with MEB architecture.
Additionally, the BMW iX (566), Volvo C40 Recharge (536), Volkswagen ID.3 (473), Audi e-tron (423), and Volvo XC40 Recharge (403) all achieved remarkably decent scores.
In retrospect, over 3,000 units of the Tesla Model Y were sold in September. However, with only 47 new registrations, it was nearly gone at this point (plus 4 Tesla Model 3).
Nevertheless, the Model Y still dominates the most popular vehicle overall, with 9,620 registrations year-to-date.
