American billionaire Elon Musk has just threatened to ban Apple devices across his companies if the tech giant decides to integrate OpenAI into iOS 18, Bloomberg reports.
Apple to partner with OpenAI for ChatGPT integration with iOS 18
Apple announced plans during its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) on Monday to integrate Apple Intelligence and ChatGPT.
With this proposed innovation, digital assistant Siri can tap ChatGPT to respond to Apple iOS 18 user requests. Notably, it is under the Apple Intelligence initiative, which aids the company in launching AI in its devices.
Apple plans to release the new capabilities to its operating systems for the iPhone, iPad and Mac computers as part of the suite of new AI features later in 2024.
“With ChatGPT from OpenAI integrated into Siri and Writing Tools, you get even more expertise when it might be helpful for you—no need to jump between tools. Siri can tap into ChatGPT for certain requests, including questions about photos or documents. And with Compose in Writing Tools, you can create and illustrate original content from scratch.”

Musk calls OpenAI integration in Apple devices a “security violation”
The announcement disappointed the Tesla and SpaceX boss, prompting him to consider banning Apple devices in his companies. He even called the potential integration of ChatGPT in Apple devices an “unacceptable security violation.”
“If Apple integrates OpenAI at the OS level, then Apple devices will be banned at my companies. That is an unacceptable security violation.
And visitors will have to check their Apple devices at the door, where they will be stored in a Faraday cage.”

Apple’s security assurance
Apple guaranteed that the planned ChatGPT integration would not track user data. It also promised to take other necessary precautions to protect users’ security.
“Privacy protections are built in when accessing ChatGPT within Siri. Requests are not stored by OpenAI, and users’ IP addresses are obscured.”

Nonetheless, xAI founder Elon Musk continued to bash Apple’s plans. He even said that Apple could not develop its own AI and had “no clue what’s actually going on once they hand your data over to OpenAI.”
Musk’s disagreement is unsurprising, considering that he is also currently attempting to win the AI race with his xAI startup. His new AI company promises to help humans rev scientific advancements and understand the universe. It also launched a ChatGPT challenger, Grok, for X Premium users.
