American electric vehicle startup Fisker has initiated another voluntary safety recall for all of its Ocean electric SUVs over a water pump issue, Reuters reported, citing the official stop-sale notice.
It is worth noting that this initiative came just less than two weeks after Fisker’s third recall in June 2024.
Water pump malfunction
According to the Part 573 Safety Recall Report, all of Fisker’s produced Ocean electric SUVs are plagued with water pump issues that could cause a loss of power.
The Fisker Ocean EVs possess an alarming issue with their cabin electric water pumps, particularly in their High Voltage Battery Management System (BMS) limp mode. Fisker apparently developed this system to restrict battery power to 8.5 kW, limiting speed to a range of 10–20 mph (20–30 km/h).
It activates when a communication loss is detected on the EV’s Local Interconnect Network 6 (LIN6) bus. All these complications are primarily due to the malfunction of the cabin electric water pump.
Coverage
This latest safety recall affects 11,308 Ocean electric SUVs Fisker Ocean electric SUVs across the world, including the United States, Canada, and Europe.
These Fisker Oceans are 2023-2024 model year units produced from February 9, 2023 to March 13, 2024.
Of that total, 7,545 units were in the US. Transport Canada has yet to release its safety recall notice.
Remedy
Fisker will replace the faulty cabin electric water pumps with new parts in all affected Ocean EVs free of charge to fix the water pump issue, according to the stop-sale notice.
According to the filing, the replacements will have improved conformal coating coverage on the Printed Circuit Board Assembly to cover the resistor and prevent the same issue from occurring.
The planned owner notification date is between August 23, 2024, and August 23, 2024.
While a recent stop-sale order may seem concerning, Fisker’s potential bulk sale of remaining Ocean inventory for $46.25 million suggests the impact might be limited. This comes after the company filed for bankruptcy protection last month.
