Electric vehicle giant Tesla has just confirmed plans to launch the Cybertruck electric pickup in the Canadian market in 2024.
Tesla Cybertruck on track for Canadian release this year
Tesla’s official Cybertruck X account reiterated plans to roll out the stainless steel electric pickup “this year.”
The announcement came in response to Drive Tesla’s report on X, revealing that the company has secured approval for its steer-by-wire technology from Canadian regulators on Thursday.
Exemption order details
Transport Canada granted Tesla an exemption order for minimum steering angle requirements under Section 9 of the Motor Vehicle Safety Act on July 18, 2024.
The approval effectively authorizes the electric pickup’s steer-by-wire system rather than a conventional steering column.
To be specific, the exemption allows the Tesla Cybertruck to evade section 7.9.4 of Technical Standards Document No. 126 governing Electronic Stability Control Systems for Light Vehicles.
With this, Tesla can offer the Cybertruck without adhering to a certain mandate that requires a minimum steering angle of ±270° for testing. The exemption will reportedly be effective until 2029.
Requirements
Transport Canada requires the Musk-led electric automaker to submit semi-annual incident reports outlining any malfunctions or failures in the steering system, both hardware and software.
Tesla must also detail its corrective measures to fix certain issues. The company will submit its first report on January 18, 2025.
In addition, Tesla must inform Transport Canada of any over-the-air (OTA) software updates to the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) system or the steering system’s steering angle that affects the ESC system.
Multi-modal and Road Safety Programs Director General Melanie Vanstone asserted that this exemption paves the way for innovative vehicle technology advancements in Canada.
The Canadian regulators will continue monitoring Tesla to ensure compliance and safety.
This newly granted exemption makes it more possible for Tesla to launch the Cybertruck electric pickup in the Canadian market this year. Tesla CEO Elon Musk also revealed plans during the 2024 Annual Shareholder Meeting last month to roll out the Cybertruck in markets beyond North America sometime in 2025.
