Power battery installations reached 27.8 GWh in China in March 2023, per China Automotive Battery Innovation Alliance (CABIA). Notably, that figure represents a year-over-year growth of 29.7% and a month-over-month increase of 26.7%.
CATL dominates the Chinese EV battery market
Chinese power battery giant CATL reported a battery deployment of 12.49 GWh last month. It remained the market leader, with a market share of 44.95%, indicating an MoM increase from 43.76% in February.
On the other hand, Chinese EV and battery leader BYD reported power battery installations of 7.40 GWh. It landed the second spot with a market share of 26.65%, representing an MoM decline from 34.19% a month ago.
CALB claimed the third highest position in the rankings, with battery installations of 2.86 GWh in March. It enjoyed an MoM share increase from just 7.39% to 10.28% in March.
The top five were completed by Gotion High-tech (4.51%) and Eve Energy (3.86%).

China’s ternary and LFP market, CATL beats BYD in the LFP market for the first time in 2023
The installed base of ternary lithium batteries in China reached 8.7 GWh, representing 31.4% of the overall deployment. Moreover, it indicates a YoY growth of 6.3% and a 29.8% increase from January.
Notably, 19.0 GWh, or 68.5 percent of the total installed base, comprised lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries. It increased by 25.3% from January and by 44.4% YoY.
CATL reportedly dominated the ternary li-ion battery market with 56.99% of the overall installed base of 4.97 GWh. CALB (16.82%) and LG Energy Solution (6.52%) followed it.
Unsurprisingly, CATL also led the LFP battery market with 39.47% of the overall installed base of 7.51 GWh. It also marks the first time that it beat BYD in this industry this year.
As mentioned, BYD landed second with a market share of 38.88% and an installed battery of 7.40 GWh. In hindsight, BYD led the market in the first two months of the year, with the corresponding market shares: of 51.52% and 49.37%.
Meanwhile, CALB (7.29%), Gotion High-Tech (6.20%), and Sunwoda completed the top four.
