Chinese automaker Chery has struck a deal with battery giant CATL to become the first company to offer the ultra-fast charging Shenxing Battery, CnEVPost reports, citing today’s announcement.
CATL announced that Chery will equip its luxury Exeed-branded electric vehicle models with CATL’s groundbreaking Shenxing Battery. These models will reportedly arrive in the market as early as Q1 2024.
CATL to mass produce the Shenxing battery by late 2023
Chinese battery manufacturer CATL recently announced plans to launch its Shenxing Battery’s large-scale production by the year’s end.
This timeline aligns with Chery’s plan to start selling the Shenxing Battery-equipped models next year.
The Chinese partners also aim to offer these EVs to the global market, including Europe, North America, the Middle East, and ASEAN.
Shenxing battery details
CATL’s Shenxing Battery is a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) that offers ultra-fast charging, which debuted on August 1, 2023, in China.
This new battery technology can enable an electric vehicle to achieve a driving range of 400 km in just 10 minutes of charging.
According to EVSpecifications, the Shenxing Battery can hit 80% State of Charge in just 10 minutes at standard room temperature. The charging time increases to 30 minutes at room temperature below 10°C.
It is also the first-ever LFP battery to offer 4C charging in the world. For context, “C” is the charging multiplier of the battery. Meanwhile, 4C indicates the battery can support 100% charging in just 15 minutes.
Its ultra-high conductivity electrolyte formulation enables the battery to deliver a maximum driving range of 700 km.
