Siemens Gamesa’s 14-222 DD offshore wind turbine prototype has just achieved a world record for the highest power output by a single wind turbine in a 24-hour period by 359 megawatt-hours, as per the Spanish-German wind giant today.
Electrek reported that this capability would supply sufficient energy for a mid-sized electric vehicle to go roughly 1.12 million miles, or 1.8 million km, as claimed by the company.
The SG 14-222 DD is a 14-megawatt (MW) offshore wind turbine with a Power Boost capability of up to 15 MW.
Furthermore, it has a rotor with a diameter of 222 meters (728 feet) and B108 blades with a length of 108 meters (354 feet). These blades are cast in a single piece and may now be reused.
Additionally, it covers 39,000 square meters (419,792 square feet). With these characteristics, the SG 14-222 DD has the capacity to power about 18,000 homes per year.
Merely ten months after generating its first electricity and transmitting it to the grid at the test site in Østerild, Denmark, Siemens Gamesa’s massive wind turbine hit this power production record.
Siemens Gamesa writes, “By increasing the rotor diameter to 222 meters with 108 meter-long blades, the SG 14-222 DD delivers more than 25% [annual energy production] AEP compared to its predecessor.
With every new generation of our offshore direct drive turbine technology – which uses fewer moving parts than geared turbines – component improvements have enabled greater performance while maintaining reliability. We are able to reduce the time to market of the SG 14-222 DD thanks to standardized processes and a fully developed supply chain. Enabling high-volume production at low risk. The serial production is planned for 2024.”
In retrospect, Siemens Gamesa received a firm order in June for 60 of its SG 14-222 DD offshore wind turbines. These will be erected in Scotland’s 882-megawatt (MW) Moray West offshore wind farm and will be the model’s initial installation.
Climate change caused by humans is warming the earth. Reducing greenhouse gas emissions is an essential strategy for addressing this problem. This may be accomplished by lowering human reliance on fossil fuels and shifting to renewable energy sources such as wind energy.
