On September 14, the leading electric vehicle charging infrastructure company ABB E-mobility unveiled its plan to fund a new EV charger factory in Columbia, South Carolina for $4 million.
According to Electrek, over 10,000 electric vehicle chargers can be made annually at the new South Carolina factory. Additionally, the 20 kW to 180 kW power-rated chargers are designed for fleets, public transportation, and school buses.
Notably, the chargers built in Columbia might be ready to hit the market as early as next year. According to the Columbia Regional Business Report, “the new facility will be located inside an existing structure at 1000 Technology Drive in West Columbia, inside the CAE Industrial Park one mile from the Columbia Metropolitan Airport.”
It is worth noting that Cary, North Carolina, serves as the US headquarters for ABB. Remarkably, the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure program’s standards and the Federal Highway Administration’s planned Buy America Act framework will be met by its South Carolina-built EV chargers.
“The need for investment in the US e-mobility sector has never been greater, as 18 million EVs are expected to be on US roads by 2030. Expanding our US manufacturing operations will allow us to better serve our customers and help advance the adoption of EVs from private vehicles to public transportation and fleets.” North America ABB E-mobility Vice president Bob Stojanovic explained.
ABB E-mobility manufactures a wide range of EV chargers worldwide, from home chargers to heavy-duty trucks. In addition, the company now manufactures transit bus chargers with 150 kW to 450 kW range in the United States.
In a Fact Sheet released today, the White House reported that businesses had committed over $700 million solely for 2022 to boost EV charging.
Impressively, ABB E-mobility has been pushing technological limits to raise performance to greater levels by integrating software into its electrification.
